A message from the director
Freetown Friends is a small, home-based morning preschool located in Reston, VA.
In 2004 I opened the doors for my unique preschool program for children 18 months to 3 years old.
I offer a structured yet flexible daily routine in a friendly, loving, and encouraging environment.
I work with the children to discover their uniqueness and individuality, and to help them learn positive interaction and communication with others. I accomplish this in an environment that includes supervised free play, art, music, stories, and outdoor play.
My area includes a large, brightly furnished indoor playroom as well as a large, fenced in, outdoor area with playground. The children share age-appropriate experiences in a guided play-based curriculum.
We are open Monday- Friday from 8:45-11: 45 am, with an option to stay until 12:45 for lunch bunch. I work with the parent to find the best fit for your family, with 2,3,4 or 5 mornings a week availability.
.Who we are
Shelley is extremely passionate about children. She has been working with children since her teen years, and has found her niche in the ages of 1-3 year olds. She loves their excitement at experiencing new things, and how curious and eager they are to learn. She hopes to leave a lasting impression on every child who attends her preschool. Shelley has a great respect
for each individual child. It’s her goal to meet them where they are and grow with them.
In her late teens, Shelley worked
as an assistant in a 2-year-old program and also cared for special needs children in one-on-
She moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1999 where she was employed as a professional nanny for 5 ½ years. During this time Shelley worked with children from 8 weeks to 9 years of age.
She was also employed at Kenwood Learn and Play, an in-home program in Bethesda, Maryland.
Shelley is CPR, First Aid, and EMAT certified and continues to build upon her child development skills through classes yearly. She is married and has five children.
Shelley loves to cook, read, and spend time with family and friends. She is an active member in her church, neighborhood, and children’s schools, as well as in the community.
Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Annie has been working as an English teacher since 2008. She was also a language coordinator for 1 year at a language School.
In 2012, she moved to the U.S. and stayed with a
family in Fairfax for two years, caring for three boys. During this time, she also had the opportunity to travel around the U.S, and to take some classes at NOVA Community College.
Annie has been with Freetown Friends since 2016. She enjoys music and singing, and plays acoustic guitar and drums. Annie is certified in First Aid and CPR. During the summer 2015 she worked as a Nanny, taking care of 3 young children.

Freetown Friends offers a preschool curriculum for children ages 18 months to 3 years. Our classroom is filled with safe, age-appropriate games, books, art supplies, and other learning tools. We also have an extensive outdoor play area with numerous ride-on toys, swings, slides, and playhouses.
We begin our day with a small manipulative activity, including puzzles, play dough, lacing and similar games to enhance fine motor skills. When all children have arrived for the day, we gather for circle time.
Circle time includes a welcome song, other songs and finger plays, books and calendar time. We then move on to snack time. Afterwards, we jump into various art projects where we paint, glue and cut, and learn to use stickers, markers and other materials. We also do a great deal of singing, dancing, dress-up and, when weather permits, outdoor play.
A sample morning schedule may include the following:
|8:45 – 9:30||⇢ Table activity and supervised free play|
|9:30 – 10:00||⇢ Circle time|
|10:00 – 10:45||⇢ Snack time and art project|
|10:45 – 11:45||⇢ Music and movement, outdoor play when possible|
Applications are accepted throughout the year. We eagerly welcome new students throughout the year as space allows.

These trips broaden the students’ views of the world and give us new places to learn about and explore together. Our trips include all family members who wish to attend.

You can trust us at Freetown Friends School LLC!
Freetown Friends School is an amazing preschool for young children. My son loved going there. There are lots of stimulating toys to play with inside and out. The outdoor play area is expansive, clean and well maintained and has lots of options from the climb on toys to slides, swings, and sandbox. There are lots of fun activities always planned and we loved the originality of the arts and crafts projects.
The personal attention that Shelley and her assistants provide to the children is nurturing and individual. I always felt that my son was well cared for when I left him. I highly recommend Freetown Friends to anyone looking for a safe, fun, clean preschool for their child.
The classroom features a seated area for snacks and craft projects, a toddler-accessible sink / wash-up area and an adjoining bathroom.
Colorful artwork, craft projects and learning aids (alphabet, numbers, shapes, calendar, birthdays, etc.) adorn our walls.
Children’s artwork is always prominently displayed around the classroom.
We have a variety of age-appropriate toys and activities for every child.
There are many items for pretend / creative play, including a small kitchen, a workbench, a doll changing station, strollers and more.
There are also many different outdoor activities to encourage physical activity. We love to enjoy the outdoors!
While not an admission requirement for any age, we are here to support potty training and child independence while using the bathroom
