A message from the director
In 2004 we opened a home-based morning preschool in Reston, Virginia for children ranging from 18 months to 3 years old with the idea of providing fun learning opportunities with an enjoyable play-based curriculum.
We offer a structured yet flexible daily schedule for the children, and enrollment options of 2,3,4 or even five mornings a week to accommodate the needs of parents & children.
We are unique in providing quality education in a small home based environment where we are able to make children feel comfortable & welcomed.
We provide young children with experiences to help foster the love of learning, and to start to develop some of the most valuable skills they will continue to build on throughout life.
Our activities include small manipulatives, creative and open play, singing, dancing, stories, outdoor play, and much more. We are open Monday- Friday from 8:45-11:45 am, with an option to stay until 12:45 for lunch.
Who we are
Shelley has a passion for children that stems from her youth. As a child herself, she started working with kids and has never looked back.
She is particularly drawn to age 1-3 year olds because of their curiosity about the world around them and how eager they are to learn new things! Shelley understands how important education can be for a child at any stage in their life.
It’s her goal to make sure each child who attends her preschool has an engaging curriculum with plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery; she wants these kids to have fun while learning, too!
Shelley has a wealth of experience caring for children. She started working as an assistant in a 2-year old program, and as caregiver to special needs children when she was just 17 years old.
Since then, Shelley moved to the Washington D.C area where she spent 5 ½ years as a professional nanny caring for children 8 weeks - 9 year old, while also working at Kenwood Learn & Play in Maryland. She currently raises her own five children, plus fosters children from the area.
It's not only her extensive knowledge that sets her apart from other child caregivers; it is all the experiences with different age groups, backgrounds, and levels of development, which have helped make her such an adept caregiver who can handle any situation thrown her way!
Shelley is CPR, First Aid, and EMAT certified. She continues to build upon her child development skills through classes yearly while spending time with family and friends.
She loves cooking, reading, hiking, as well as being an active member at church. Shelley enjoys volunteering around her community, and finding ways to get her family involved, too.
Cassis is passionate about her new position at Freetown Friends School. Originally from Bolivia, she moved to Northern Virginia when she was 13 and has a strong background in Spanish language skills which is a great benefit to the classroom.
In 2013, Cassis received an A.S. Degree in Social Sciences with a specialization in Teacher Education from Northern Virginia Community College and is especially excited about working with children during their earlier formative years to provide support as they observe, experiment, and explore the world around them.
She works hard to provide a safe and engaging environment for the children she cares for. Her goal is to foster their academic development while providing plenty of fun!
Having three children of her own, Cassis is a hard working mother who loves spending time with family. She also has two dogs and enjoys the finer things in life like music, fashion, art history, hikes, and going to new museums around every corner she goes!
Freetown Friends is a preschool that offers an educational environment for children ages 18 months to 3 years.
Our classroom has learning tools including age-appropriate games, books, art supplies and other fun toys so children can learn in the most engaging way possible.
We also have an outdoor play area containing ride-on toys, swings, sandbox, and a lot of nature to explore!
Freetown Friends provides a safe place for your child to grow socially and academically, while still having lots of opportunities outside of school hours to continue to explore their creativity.
We begin every day with a small manipulative activity that's great for fine motor skills.
Puzzles, play dough, lacing, and similar games are offered upon arrival at school in the morning so our hands can be warmed up before circle time starts!
Circle time is a wonderful way for kids to learn and participate in large group activities.
At Circle Time, we start with a Welcome song, involve the children in other songs, finger plays, books, and close with calendar time.
This all leads up to snack-time, where children get offered exciting and fun snacks, and plenty of water to recharge!
Afterwards, we jump into various art projects using a wide variety of materials that foster a child’s creativity and enhance small motor skills and sensory skills.
A sample morning schedule may include the following:
|8:45 - 9:30||⇢ Table activity and supervised free play|
|9:30 - 10:00||⇢ Circle time|
|10:00 - 10:45||⇢ Snack time and art project|
|10:45 - 11:45||⇢ Music and movement, outdoor play when possible|
Applications are accepted throughout the year. We eagerly welcome new students throughout the year as space allows.

We plan one to two field trips each year. Past destinations have included the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum, Cox Farms, Meadowlark Gardens, Roer’s Zoofari, Leesburg Animal Park, Frying Pan Park, Walker Nature Center, and a local fire station.
These trips broaden the students’ views of the world and give us new places to learn about and explore together. Our trips include all family members who wish to attend.
Summer camp is offered each year between June and August. Students enjoy daily water play (weather permitting) and have fun exploring a variety of themes.
We have studied caterpillars and butterflies, ladybugs, life under the sea, life in the lakes. We have explored fairy tales through fun and creative means, such as: visiting outer space, pirate adventures, battling with superheroes,
and much more!
Camp is held outdoors in the shaded yard. The children enjoying getting wet and messy every day through various sensory experiences such as shaving cream, slime, water beads, cornstarch, and play dough.
Camp enrollment fills up quickly, so please contact us in the spring, to allow us to be able to offer your child a summer of fun!
I feel so lucky to have found Miss Shelley’s Freetown Friends School. It has been such a wonderful experience for both my son and our family. My son started when he was 20 months and this was his first school experience. I was really nervous how he was going to adjust because when he started he was very shy. He has been going to Miss Shelley’s now for almost a year and he has really blossomed and is now so outgoing and well adjusted. He has developed such great friendships at the school and we are so sad that he is about to outgrow the school. Shelley has been amazing with my son and you can really tell she cares about each one of her kids and their needs. Shelley has such a great combination of organization, friendliness, fun and enthusiasm that children are just drawn to her. You couldn’t ask for a better teacher and school for your child at such an important age of development.
All my grandchildren who live in the area have attended Freetown Friends, and they all loved it – a good experience all around! They all thought Miss Shelley was the best!
Freetown Friends School is a gem. My daughter loves it so much that she begs to stay at the optional lunch bunch every day that she attends! The school is homey, educational and fun. The caregivers are nurturing, loving and caring. Shelley herself is professional and as accommodating and flexible as she can be. I’ve yet to see a child not thrive at Freetown Friends School. I cannot recommend Shelley and the school highly enough!
We love Freetown Friends & Ms. Shelley!! My 2½-year-old has been with Shelley 3 mornings a week since last August, and we’re so glad to have such a loving, safe, and creative environment for her first preschool experience. We’ve seen huge changes in our daughter over this year, in no small part due to the activities and love she’s receiving. Some days I have to fight to get her to leave 🙂 I’ve known Shelley for over 4 years now and you couldn’t trust your children to a better person or more qualified home preschool!
First of all, this is one of the few pre-schools I have found to specialize in kids of this age. Shelley really knows and loves young children and does a fabulous job with them. Both of my daughters attended FF and they came home with wonderful songs to share and taught me about things like aphids. My kids are now in traditional pre-school, and the art projects they brought home from FF were much more creative and they did something wonderful EVERY day. Over a year later, my kids still ask me when they can go back to Miss Shelley’s. I can’t express what a huge fan we are of FF and I have recommended it to all of my friends! We drive 30 minutes in traffic to get there and it was still worth it.
The classroom features a seated area for snacks and craft projects, a toddler-accessible sink / wash-up area and an adjoining bathroom.
Colorful artwork, craft projects and learning aids (alphabet, numbers, shapes, calendar, birthdays, etc.) adorn our walls.
Children's artwork is always prominently displayed around the classroom.
We have a variety of age-appropriate toys and activities for every child.
There are many items for pretend / creative play, including a small kitchen, a workbench, a doll changing station, strollers and more.
There are also many different outdoor activities to encourage physical activity. We love to enjoy the outdoors!
While not an admission requirement for any age, we are here to support potty training and child independence while using the bathroom
